2 nephi 4:28 - 5:9

why is it important to continue to be faithful when our prayers are not answered immediately or in the way we desire?

--> i think more often than not our prayers aren't answered immediately.  that's one of the tests of this life, to trust that God really is in charge and has everything under control.  that He will reveal what needs to be revealed when it needs to be revealed.  and that all answers to prayers will come at the perfectly opportune time when they are supposed to come.  i've also found that more often than not, the answers to my prayers come little by little, through a long process, as i continue to make the right decisions, or make a choice at all and start going one direction.  then, and only then, can the Lord confirm or deny my actions and give me peace i need to continue on the path i chose.  if i were to lose faith along the way, perhaps the whole answer wouldn't come, or i would miss part of it.  the Lord allows us to face things that will test our patience everyday, so we can be "more fit for His kingdom".
