how and why is satan trying to divide the people today?
--> he is trying to divide them for the same purpose he's always been trying to divide people: because he is doing everything he can to fight against the plan and will of Heavenly Father. satan can't have a body. he can't come to earth as a mortal and learn and progress and experience the joy, hope, love, and peace that we feel, or have hope for a resurrection and eternal life someday... so he works his hardest to ensure that he takes as many as he can down with him.
the "how" is also an easy question - though uniquely crafted to each individual on the earth. the scary thing is that satan knows us really well... better than we know ourselves, actually. he knows what our weaknesses are and how to tempt us so we fall. there's a reason the scriptures and the brethren of the church are constantly talking about the importance of doing the simple things: reading scriptures, praying daily, attending church to renew our baptismal covenant, serving others, and staying faithful to the covenants we have made. it is these small fortifications that will help us to build the solid foundation to stay strong against the temptations of the devil.
