3 nephi 1: 1 - 14
even though many great signs and miracles took place among the people, what reason did the wicked give for persecuting the righteous? why do signs usually fail to convince the wicked to change?
--> the wicked said that the sign hadn't come so the righteous' prayers were in vain. they attributed the sign not coming to their lack of faith, and told them their joy had also been in vain. it's interesting to note that as the prophecies from the prophets about the coming of the Savior increased, the persecutions increased as well.
in the scriptures it says "a wicked and idolatrous generation seeketh after a sign". signs fail to convince the wicked because seeing isn't believing. the Lord has designed a specific way to experience the truth for ourselves and come to know what we need to know about Him and His teaching, and it isn't seeing a physical sign. when justin brown was giving his farewell speech for his mission, he said that all the spoken words that day didn't matter, but rather the feelings that you experienced as you were listening.
