the end!
this has been a marvelous journey this year to slow down and read the book of mormon in small chunks, analyzing what i am reading and answering the questions that have been posed. i have a true testimony of the book of mormon and the power it has to heal broken hearts and answer the questions of the soul! thanks for following my journey this year. now, onto a new journey in 2015 :)

moroni 10: 3 - 5 is often referred to as "moroni's promise". we invite all who read these verses to act on this promise and to ask God, who is our loving HEavenly Father, to know if the book of mormon is a true boo of scripture. we know that if you pray with real intent that God will answer your prayer through the Holy Ghost. please share your testimony of the book of mormon.
--> i have read the book of mormon more times than i can count in my life. each time, i take the time to ask again and again if it is true. every time, i feel the same sense of peace and enlightenment that it is indeed a true book. but stronger than that feeling of confirmation, is the feeling of confirmation i receive when i apply the teachings of the book into my daily life. when i take the time to really search out answers to my questions in the book, it applies to every aspect of my life. every triumph, every joy, every heartache, everything! i know with all my heart that the book of mormon is the word of God, which stands side by side with the bible as a witness of the reality of our Savior, Jesus Christ. the book of mormon is THE most powerful witness of the Savior that we have on this earth, and the only book that comes with a powerful promise that those who study it, think about what they learned, and pray to ask if it is true, WILL come to know it is true. and if it is true, then it follows that joseph smith really was a prophet, that Christ is the Savior of the world, and that the true gospel of Jesus Christ has once again been restored in its fulness to the earth that we now live on!
this is a video that's floating around facebook right now and i totally love it. just a simple explanation of the book of mormon and the power it can have in your life. give it a watch.. it's the best 3 minutes you'll spend on the internet today!

what do you think it means that little children are "alive in Christ"? what do you need to do to become alive in Christ?
--> as a general rule, children are active participants in life. they are curious, they are exploring constantly, they are aware of the littlest details and ask 1,000 "why?" questions everyday. their eyes are open and they are agents acting unto themselves. as adults, we naturally lose that sense of wonder and excitement about life. to be alive in Christ to me means that we are actively participating in the things He wants us to do and actively applying the principles of the gospel in our lives. we are in awe at the beauty of the world and are constantly searching for more things to learn about the Savior and more ways to apply His gospel.

why do you think meekness and lowliness of heart are necessary in order to have faith and hope in the atonement of Jesus Christ?
--> it is impossible to learn anything of value if we are not meek, humble, and open to inspiration from the Father. to access the atonement, we must exercise our faith, repent, be baptized by proper authority, receive and use the gift of the Holy Ghost, and faithfully endure to the end. each one of these steps requires a sense of meekness and lowliness of heart to be optimally used.

what does it mean to you to have Jesus Christ as your advocate?
--> Jesus Christ stands next to us as we speak to Father. He pleads our case. He knows us perfectly - not only our actions, but our intentions and desires behind those actions. there is no one else i would rather have as my advocate than my older brother and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is my King.

as we celebrate the Savior's birth, what can we do to better serve Him with real intent?
--> they say that people's prayers are answered through other people who are sensitive enough to the whisperings of the spirit to listen and know who in their life needs them. one way i would like to serve Christ better in 2015 is to pray for opportunities to bless those that have prayed for a miracle or for angels, then willingly respond to that prompting. i know a girl named jentrie that has recently been diagnosed with cancer and is constantly posting the most inspiring things on her blog. the other day she was sharing a story where she prayed about this exact thing and the miracle that ensued after she followed the prompting and acted. she said one thing that especially stood out to me... she said rather than saying "let us know if we can help" or something to that effect, she said "i'm bringing dinner at 6". i realized when i was reading this that if we ask for help, we aren't any help at all because we are still begging them to ask us for something they need rather than seeing the need and filling it. no one likes to be a project, but everyone needs their prayers answered through earthly angels. i hope to be an earthly angel for many more people this year than i have been in the past :)

when have you been blessed because a priesthood holder fulfilled his responsibilities?
--> many, many times! too many times to count or speak to! particularly, i remember one experience on my mission when i was watching the little deacons pass the sacrament. i just had this overwhelming sense of gratitude for the service they were providing me every week. by righteously exercising their priesthood, i am given the opportunity to be cleansed of my sins every single week as i attend church. i have been the recipient of many wonderful priesthood blessings, wise counsel from bishops and other church leaders, and been issued inspired callings by righteous bishops. i love and adore the men in my life that willingly and virtuously honor and exercise their priesthood in ways to benefit those around them. grateful especially for a father and 2 brothers that take their calling and responsibility seriously.

what consequences can anger have for an individual or a family?
--> anger is the least respectful way to deal with feelings. anger can destroy relationships faster than many other things. i was blessed to grow up in a family where anger was never present. with parents that chose to discuss their disagreements with respect for each other and a common goal of coming to a healthy and positive solution and outcome. i am grateful for that example because it makes all the difference in the way that i deal with people now.

what caused coriantumr to have a change of heart? when have you experienced a change of heart?
--> coriantumr changed his heart when he remembered the words of the prophet ether, and when he saw the great destruction that was occurring around him in a very real way. for me, a change of heart comes when i have an awakening and a desire to come closer to the Lord. a change of heart comes when something drastic happens in my life that reminds me how far i've drifted. a change of heart comes when i learn something mind boggling and desire to do and be better because of what i've learned. there are many things that can motivate us to have a change of heart. a new year is always a time of changing hearts for me... so i'm looking forward to 2015 to come :)

consider the feelings of the Lord as the people refused to repent. what can we learn from these verses?
--> i am not a parent yet. but i am a school teacher. and being a school teacher has taught me so much about the relationship we have with our Father in Heaven. i care SO much about my students. i give them boundaries and discipline them because i love them and my perspective is greater than theirs. when i have taught and taught and discussed and had meaningful conversations with my students about choice and right and wrong, and still see them do things that i know they know better not to do, it breaks my heart. it breaks my heart to see them struggle and to be hurt and to not recognize my motivations. sometimes i look at them and think, "if only you would listen to me, your life would be so much simpler and you would be so much happier!" i truly believe the Lord feels the same way. He has taught us the principles, then allows us to govern ourselves. i'm sure He looks at us in all his loving glory and wisdom and just shakes his head at us thinking why don't we just do what we know is right. the great thing about the Lord is that He loves us so much that He doesn't have those demeaning thoughts about us at all... He sincerely wants what is best for us, and wants for us to choose what is best, which is why He's given us the beautiful gift of agency.

what can we learn about the danger of coveting from these verses? how can we avoid coveting and selfishness?
--> i think one of the greatest dangers of coveting is it allows us to see what we don't have and focus on that instead of being grateful for the things that we do have and the opportunities we have been given. times in my life when i've been more covetous of something or someone than others have been times when i'm not happy. when i am grateful for what i have and content to live the life i have been alloted, i am happier in every aspect.

what do you think moroni meant when he wrote the first shall be last and the last shall be first, in relation to the gathering of israel?
--> there was a lady that posted on the bofm page with a comment that i really loved... so here's that... "found this by orson pratt which describes by thoughts more than perfectly! 'now the gospel, when it was preached in ancient times, was preached first to the jew, the house of israel, to those of israelitish origin, and when they counted themselves unworthy of eternal life, and rejected that gospel, 'lo,' says paul, 'we turn unto the gentiles.' acts 13:46 says 'the gentiles then, heard it last; they were last to embrace the gospel of the kingdom, and the jews first, that is, as many of them would believe and repent. but in the last days, when the angel brings the gospel, it is reversed, and it is preached first to the gentiles, to bring in their fullness, and to fulfill their times, and then it will be sent to the house of israel" (journal of discourses 18:176b)

why do you think it is important for us to recognize our weaknesses? why do you think we need to be meek in order to overlook the weaknesses of others?
--> a seminary teacher once pointed out to me that in ether 12:27, it doesn't say the Lord gives us weaknessES, it says He gives us weakness. one weakness. our physical body. that is why it's so important to overcome the natural man. lately i've actually been thinking a lot about the natural man and all the ways we need to overcome it. i've been thinking about how i know the right things to do - whether in a commandment sense, or even things silly as flossing teeth, or what kind of diet i should eat to feel the best. but, i don't always do what i know to be beneficial and helpful. why? because of the natural man. the natural man is lazy. he doesn't want to change. putting off the natural man and becoming a disciple of Christ - a TRUE disciple of Christ, is one of the greatest challenges we face, yet also comes with some of the greatest of blessings :)

what do you think it means to "abound" in good works? think of people you know who always seem to abound in good works and are not ashamed to glorify God. what are some specific things they do that make them good examples of this principle?
--> abounding in good works is more of a lifestyle than anything we do in an isolated situation. the people i know that abound in good works, just "go about doing good", like the Savior. they pray in the morning for their eyes to be opened to see the people that are in need, to be inspired to be led to those that need help, and they go and do. they don't need accolades or recognition. they serve out of the kindness and charity of their hearts. they are truly Christ-like.

are prophets today rejected like in these verses? why do you think the people rejected the prophets?
--> prophets today are just as rejected as prophets of old, just maybe not in the physical/violent ways that we read about in the book of mormon. many people speak out against prophets today, especially when their teachings aren't kosher with the lifestyle people are living. there were many people who spoke about following the prophet in the recent general conference, which is a sign to me that it is a problem that is prevalent today. people get so comfortable with their lifestyle, they oppose anyone that doesn't jive with that. that, and just looking for a reason to fall away, are the two main reasons people reject the prophets, i believe. but as the primary song goes: "follow the prophet, he knows the way!"

what are some influences in our society that can make our lives impure? what can we do to keep our lives pure?
--> everywhere you go there are influences that make our lives impure. every good thing that has been created has an evil twist to it as well. evil no longer has to be sought out, it is around us all the time wherever we are, in our pockets, on billboards, in magazines, at the checkstand, everywhere. because it's impossible to avoid evil, it's important to learn how to cope with it, how to dismiss an impure thought. keeping our thoughts pure is a battle we are continually having to face, a battle that is of utmost importance to our lives now and in our future. some things i've found helpful when i'm trying to dismiss an impure thought are to think of the Savior on the cross, or sing a hymn to myself or say a scripture to myself. anything to distract myself. president uchtdorf taught that our mind is a one act stage - only able to carry one thought at a time, so if we can replace the bad thoughts with the good, we are golden.

why would satan try to cause contention within a family?
--> the family is the central unit of society, and central to God's plan. if he can break up families, he has won his battle. no success outside the home can compensate for failure within the home. everything we do should strengthen our families, yet sometimes we treat the people that are the very closest to us the very worst. this is exactly what satan wants. satan is readily attacking the family every moment of every day. are we fortified and fighting back? this is why family scripture study and family prayer, family activities to bind us together, and family goals and councils are so vitally important. my family is not perfect, but i am grateful for wonderful siblings and parents whom i can fight this battle with! there's no one else i would rather have by my side :)

why do you suppose that even after periods of righteousness the jaredite civilization kept falling prey to secret combinations? how can we apply these verses to our lives?
--> no matter who you are, you are tempted. we all fall victim to temptation and sin during our lives. if we are not constantly doing those things that would fortify us, and keep our foundation unwaveringly rooted in the Lord and His teachings and lifestyle, we will fall too. the pride cycle is so prevalent in the book of mormon. sometimes we read this and think how dumb the people were to sin after they had seen so many miracles, but we could say the same about ourselves. that's exactly why repentance is in place - we need second chances, and the Lord is graciously willing to give them. "God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son!"

what do you think it means to "walk humbly before the Lord"? what are some examples you have seen of people following this principle? how have your parents and others encouraged you to walk humbly before the Lord?
--> the Lord continually invites us to be humble. it is only when we are humble that we are teachable. when pride creeps in, we cannot learn because we are too self-centered and worried about what we want, not what the Lord wants. one example of walking humbly before the Lord is my mission president's wife, sister pam archibald. i'm always amazed when i speak to her that everything revolves around the Savior. every decision she makes reverts back to something the Lord inspired her to do. any conversation or question we have, she talks about a study that she recently did in the book of mormon or a conference talk she heard. she constantly prays for the Lord's will to be done. she constantly prays for the Lord to teach us, and to allow us to be teachable. i love listening to her pray. i love being in her presence. i love her attitude towards her Heavenly Father and how she learns from Him.

in what ways can you be a witness of the book of mormon, even without seeing the plates? how can your witness of the book of mormon influence other people?
--> i can bear witness of the book of mormon in my words: testimony meeting, in interactions with other people, in sharing the gospel with people around me, using the scriptures to answer questions people may ask me, openly share my feelings about it, etc. i can bear testimony of the book of mormon in my actions: actively keeping the commandments taught within, living my life the way it teaches me, and doing what Christ would have me do. the book of mormon is the most powerful witness of Jesus Christ that we have on this planet, and i am so grateful to have it!!

why do you think we need to believe the truths we have already received before the Lord will give us more?
--> elder richard g. scott talks about this a lot in regards to revelation... that we need to act on the revelation we have received before the Lord will give us more. that we need to write down the revelation we are receiving then ask God if there is more. some people complain that general conference or church repeats the same topics and talks all the time, year after year. i just think to myself that if we really kept and followed faithfully the simple doctrines that are always taught, we wouldn't have as great of a need to repeat the same things over and over, and we could hear some deeper things... but that is not the mind or will of God. line upon line, precept on precept. in our own lives, we can receive far more than we already have when we act on the things we already know and believe and have been given.

--> why do you think it is important for us to recognize our dependence on the Lord when we ask for His help?
--> i think we all have righteous desires in our hearts, but we also need trust in the Lord that we are headed the right direction. we can do nothing without Him. we need Him every moment of every day. when we ask for His help, we are showing humility.
i love verse 5 in this passage: "behold, o Lord, thou canst do this. we know that thou are able to show forth great power, which looks small unto the understanding of men." God is great. His power is great. His love is greater. and He wants to help us. we simply have to submit and come to Him.

the brother of jared asked the Lord questions concerning air, steering the boat and light. what were the different ways the Lord answered his prayers and what are the ways the Lord answers your prayers?
--> to the first request, the Lord said, "go to work and build." so they did, just as they had done in the past. the second prayer, the Lord told him exactly what to do to solve the problem they were praying about. the third time, the Lord offered a few ways that wouldn't work, then asked the brother of jared to propose a solution (again, proving that he trusts us). i honestly don't think it would've mattered what the brother of jared proposed... the Lord would've made it work, because of his faith. He gives us opportunities to learn and grow for ourselves.

when have you followed a spiritual prompting and then received further direction from God? why do you think we sometimes need to respond to a spiritual prompting before we can receive additional revelation?
--> because God trusts us. He trusts us to make good decisions and use the gift of the Holy Ghost that we have been given to aide us in that resolve. rarely in my life have i received answers while i'm kneeling down in prayer. the answers always come when i've made a decision and have gone a certain direction, THEN the confirmations come. THEN things fall into place. THEN the peace comes. of all the things i have a testimony of, this is one of the strongest... that God will never let us go down the wrong path for too long. but He does trust us to make up our mind and start walking.

what principles can we learn from the way the brother of jared prayed and the way the Lord answered his prayers?
--> i have a strong testimony of the power of specific prayer. i've seen it bless and influence my life time and time again. i think i really gained a testimony of this on my mission. but it has continued to amaze me since how specific the Lord can be when we are specific with Him. the brother of jared is a great example of praying for specific things. and what he prayed for was given to him. case in point.

how can we ensure that the things we pray for reflect what the Lord wants for us?
--> i remember my dad saying once that he often prayed to know what to pray for. at the time he told me this, i had never thought to do that. in the bible dictionary it talks about praying in the mind of Christ, when our desires become His desires. my heart is far from desiring only things that Christ would desire, but i'm grateful for the chance to continually repent and change and become more holy.

what experiences have you had that confirm that God is still a God of miracles?
--> one of many evidences i have that God is a God of miracles is all the small seemingly circumstantial things that happen every single day. things that mean the world to me, things that i thought would've been nice, things that would make life a little easier, and things i never would've planned for myself, but ended up working out better than i would've planned anyway. to me, it is a miracle that God knows each of us so well and hears all our prayers and pleas and answers in timely and specific ways. miraculous things are happening all day, everyday. just open your eyes :)

how can the book of mormon help us withstand the wickedness in our day? if a friend asked you why the book of mormon is valuable to you, what would you say?
--> i would say that the book of mormon teaches true principles that are founded on Jesus Christ, proven to bring success and happiness in this life. i would say that the stories are full of great examples of men and women who have put to the test the things that Christ taught, and many examples - good and bad - are contained inside. the book of mormon can also help us withstand wickedness because reading it every day brings a sort of spiritual strength that allows us to combat the evils of the world more readily.

when have you been obedient to one of Heavenly Father's commandments in an especially difficult circumstance? how do you feel you were blessed for doing so?
--> there was a specific day on my mission that i really didn't feel like fasting. fasting has always been a hard commandment for me, and this day in particular, i just wasn't excited about it. i was excited about the cause that we were fasting for, but not about the actual fasting. but i prayed for strength, and i did it. i felt so blessed because just a few hours into our fast, the investigator that we were fasting about, called and told us she was ready to be baptized. that wasn't exactly what we were fasting for, but it was even better than what we were, and what we thought we wanted. God hears and answers prayers and goes to great lengths to bless us when we do what He asks.

--> the book of mormon is the most powerful witness of Jesus Christ that we have on this earth. it is the one book with a promise that those who read it and pray to know its truthfulness, will. they will come to know that Christ is the Savior of the world, and many other great things. i gained my testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, through reading the book of mormon, and applying the principles taught inside. i LOVE the book. i have loved this year, reading it slowly day by day. i have also taken a faster approach - read it in 3 days once. i have read the book more times than i can count, and each time i do, i gain a greater witness of the truthfulness of the book, and the reality of my Savior, Jesus Christ. what can we learn from mormon 5: 1 - 2 about where we ought to turn first for help in our afflictions? how have you seen this in your life?
--> mormon made the observation that the people were crying to the Lord for help, but they were unwilling to repent of their sins and iniquities. they expected the Lord to help them, but weren't willing to put in the work or effort to make their lives right with His teachings. he also made the comment that the people looked to him, as their leader, to deliver them from their afflictions. he, of course, was not the source for that relief either. he needed to direct them to the Lord. and, as a great, righteous leader, he did.

what changes can you make now to become the person God wants you to be?
--> one thing that stood out to me in these verses was a simple statement in verse 3, "they did not realize that it was the Lord that had spared them, and granted unto them a chance for repentance." then it talks about how they hardened their hearts. i always hope to live in a mindset where i recognize God's hand in all things. i always want to attribute everything that happens to His hand and His blessings in my life. there are many things that God wants me to change about myself, i'm sure... and i always strive to live in a way that would allow me to learn what i need to learn from the experiences and opportunities that i have - the trials and the happy times alike. God can make me much, much more than i could ever make of myself... why wouldn't i want to live in a way that He can shape and mold me? { can't think of a better set of hands holdin' my reins }

how is mormon's example of righteousness helpful to you?
--> mormon had so much faith. even though he was surrounded by unfortunate circumstances, and people that were less than agreeable to work with, he was so positive and lived with faith that one day things would turn out ok, and he would be with God again. he continued to encourage his people to pray and turn to God, even when he got a less than desirable response from them. he continued to live what he knew was right, even when it wasn't popular, and when it would've been easier to deny the faith and sorrow like the rest of them. sometimes when i compare the trials i am facing to the ones people in book of mormon times faced, i feel silly that i ever complain. a cold shower is nothing compared to the things these people had to face. this makes mormon's example even more impressive to me! he was truly the right man for the calling at that time.

in what ways is the sorrowing that mormon hoped for different from the sorrowing he actually witnessed? how can you support those who are truly sorrowing unto repentance?
--> mormon thought the people were sorrowing unto repentance... that they truly felt bad about what they had done and were turning their hearts to God. but he was wrong.. they were sorrowing because the Lord wouldn't allow them to "take happiness in sin". so, rather than have a broken heart and contrite spirit, they cursed God and wished to die (#morbid). when there are people in my life that are truly sorrowing unto repentance, i can support them by showing them love. it's hard to by empathetic or even sympathetic because you just can't understand all that they are going through. but, no matter what, i can show love and acceptance to them. sometimes in those deepest, darkest, rock bottom times, that's all you need.

in what ways do you think pride is the enemy of unity?
--> pride is the enemy of unity because when you are more prideful, you are more concerned with your own agenda than being right. when i left on my mission, andy allen told me that the best advice he could give was "it's better to be one than to be right." i thought about that a lot on my mission. that unity was way more important than proving to a companion or a member or someone on the street or an investigator that i was right. this was a hard lesson for me that i had to learn over and over again. but, i have a strong testimony of it. unity is way more important than being right. :)

why do you think some people might doubt that God will keep His promises? how do you know that God keeps His promises?
--> i think a lot of people pray with the mindset that things will turn out the way they are supposed to turn out in their timeframe. one thing that's always stuck out to me in my patriarchal blessing is that the phrase "in the due time of the Lord". i truly believe that God will fulfill all His promises to me, but the waiting for His due time is the hard part. i also think some people want certain promises to be fulfilled, then they don't see what the Lord is really fulfilling for them. does that make sense? like they're so caught up in what they want or think they need to have, that they don't recognize the promises that are really being fulfilled.

what principle can we learn form mormon about how to receive additional understanding? what are some situations in which we might need to ask Heavenly Father for greater understanding?
--> there are many situations that i could use greater understanding from my Father. i appreciate the opportunities to talk to Him and figure out what He would have me do. He knows way better than i do about the direction of my life and the day to day comings and goings, and cares to help us figure out what we need to do. i have been touched by elder scott's talk, in which he gave 4 tools to help us in our lives. one of the tools is prayer - he said, "choose to converses, and tell Him everything." the times in my life when i've taken the time to express all my feelings with the Lord and talk through everything with him like i would my mom or a good friend (when faced with a difficult situation), i have felt so much closer to Him.

He knows way better than i do about the direction of my life and the day to day comings and goings, and cares to help us figure out what we need to do. i have been touched by elder scott's talk, in which he gave 4 tools to help us in our lives. one of the tools is prayer - he said, "choose to converses, and tell Him everything." the times in my life when i've taken the time to express all my feelings with the Lord and talk through everything with him like i would my mom or a good friend (when faced with a difficult situation), i have felt so much closer to Him.

what joy have you felt in sharing the gospel with others or having the gospel shared with you?
--> one of the happiest times in my life was my full-time mission in calgary, canada BECAUSE i spent 18 months selflessly sharing the gospel with my brothers and sisters. i was so happy because my main intent was to teach people about Jesus Christ and allow them to experience the joy they can experience when they have a personal relationship with Him.

based on what you have studied today, how would you explain the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to a friend?
--> the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the doctrine of Christ. president archibald hammered the doctrine of Christ into us for days on the mission. the doctrine of the gospel is exercising faith, repenting, being baptized, receiving (and using) the gift of the Holy Ghost, and enduring to the end... which really means repeating the process faithfully forever. the good news of the gospel is that we have a Savior, Jesus Christ, that came to earth to perform the atonement and provide a way that we can return to live with Heavenly Father and our family. the doctrine of Christ is the way that we access and apply the atonement in our lives every single day.

what do you think it means for the church to be built upon His gospel? why do you think it is important for the church to be built on His gospel rather than on the works of men?
--> the difference between the church and the gospel isn't something i've thought about a lot until recently in my life - like the past few years. but on my mission i was talking to a bishop about some people in the ward that were inactive in the gospel but active in the church. this got me thinking about how easy it is to go through the motions in the church, but let your testimony fade. just today in church, actually, i was thinking about how a lot of days in church i just sit there and exist during meetings and don't try too hard to participate.
the main thing that sets this church apart from the rest of the religions in the world is that we are built on the gospel of Jesus Christ, not the doctrines or works of men. that's why the church is constant and consistent, because it will always be founded upon the gospel. Jesus Christ stands at the head of this church.

what are you doing in your life that demonstrates your belief in the book of mormon?
--> this is a good question that has caused me to self-reflect. i have admitted this many times on this blog, but i don't read my scriptures as consistently as i should. in fact, today is really november 23... i am a few weeks behind on this blog! yikes. but i saw a meme the other day on instagram that had a picture of mormon transcribing and it said, "you don't want to read? it's cool... i just spent lots of time and effort compiling it all for you", or something to that effect... hah. we have a very easy time compared to the times of old - just picking up our books or turning on our smart phones. SO. i need to demonstrate my belief of the book of mormon better by more consistently reading it.

in what ways is searching the words of the prophets diligently different from only reading the words of the prophets? why do you think it is important to search the words of isaiah and the other prophets diligently?
--> when i was a teenager, bishop williams related the study of the scriptures to water sports. he said you can water ski, just skimming over the surface. or you can snorkel, digging a little deep but not seeing too much, or scuba dive, where you prepare and have the right gear ready, and dive deep, deep, deep and explore. i've always loved that analogy. i think the times i've actually scuba dived in the scriptures is less than i would like to admit... but those times have been way more meaningful than the times i have not. searching diligently also brings to mind a sense of consistency.

what does it mean to you to not cease to pray in your heart? how do you think praying in your heart can influence your weekly experience of partaking of the sacrament?
--> a few months ago, my dad was speaking to our relief society in the singles ward, and he said that that morning he had opened a prayer with the Lord, and hadn't closed it, nor did he plan to until the evening hours came. i was so struck by this. he mentioned that he was much more careful with his language the rest of the day, more careful with his thoughts, and more careful with the way he treated other people. he said it was a beautiful experience to just have an ongoing conversation with his Father all day.
so a few days later i tried it. it was a wonderful experience. i think there's something to having a prayer in your heart all day. i think about my closest friends, and how often i talk with them via text or e-mail or in person or on the phone. Heavenly Father wants to hear from us just as much, no, more! than we talk to our closest friends. when i choose to make this a priority in my life, i feel the blessings and the added measure of the spirit.
in answer to the second question of how praying in your heart can influence the weekly experience of taking the sacrament, i think it would help me to be more in tune with what i am doing wrong and how i need to fix it, and just have an overall better feeling about myself and the direction my life is going. who can't benefit from the added measure of the spirit? so. pray more. all day. when have your righteous desires and prayers helped you to feel the influence of the spirit?
-->first, i want to mention that i think it's inspiring in verse 3 when it says this, "they did labor exceedingly all that night, that they might be on the morrow in the place where Jesus should show himself unto the multitude." they were so anxious to get to the place that Christ was teaching, they put everything on hold to travel quickly and be with Him. just thinking this morning about my own pursuit of the Savior... am i constantly trying my hardest to quickly find Him? we have access to many of His words and teachings at the click of a button, or the turning of a page, and yet that urgency is gone. i'll work on this :)
desires dictate everything we do. righteous desires are the root of all the good that we do in this life. i find that when my desires are aligned with righteous intentions, i feel a greater measure of the spirit in my life. i often have to pray for the Lord to educate my desires and help me to desire the things of God and eternity as opposed to the things that i think i need.

--> i love the verse where this question stemmed from: "hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. behold, i am the light which ye shall hold up - that which ye have seen me do. behold ye see that i have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed."
to be like Christ, we simply have to do what He did, or would do, if He were here. in the moment, it's not always as simple as i would like for it to be, but it is always worth it. when i think of the question that was posed earlier, the thoughts that run through my head are thoughts of desire to commit to the Savior and leading other people back to Him.

although partaking of the sacrament takes a small amount of time, the effects of preparing for and participating in this ordinance are eternal. what can we do to always remember the Savior after we have partaken of the sacrament and during the rest of the week?

how does understanding the Savior's compassionate nature help you to exercise faith in Him?
--> Christ's compassion allows me to have faith in Him because i know he understands me and where i'm at. why should we obey the commandments? how have you been blessed when you have kept the commandments with real intent?
--> obedience brings faith. simply put. if we want more faith, we need to be more obedient. we are promised many blessings as we keep the commandments. i've felt those blessings so so so many times in my life. sometimes when i'm not 100% keeping all the commandments i know i need to be keeping, i recognize an absence of something in my life, and in the end i always attribute that back to my desire and obedience to the commandments of the Lord. what fundamental truths do you learn from Christ's teachings in these verses? how will you incorporate these important teachings into your life?
--> i love the part that asks the question about if you were to ask a brother for a loaf of bread, would he give you a stone? (no!) and just how much Heavenly Father loves us. He desires to give us what we righteously desire. He does not wish to deny us the blessings He has in store for us. i've also always loved verse 20: "by their fruits, ye shall know them". it was an easy answer to give to so many investigators on my mission - that if they doubted anything that the prophet or church leaders did, they could just look at the fruits of their labors and judge if they were good or evil. seems like a good "temperature check" to me!

based on your experience, why might it be difficult to always love and serve God over the things of the world? why is putting God first worth the effort?
--> when we put God first, all other things fall into place, or fall out of our lives. in sunday school the other day, someone was mentioning that we often don't put the things of God first, because other entertainment of the world seems more enticing and exciting in the moment, when really, the things of God will always be better for us, and more eternal! in a world where we have so much going on and create so much busy-ness for ourselves, it takes effort and consistent diligence to make sure the things of God are staying at our priority.

how can our motives for doing righteous works affect the way we do them? what are some righteous motives that might inspire a person to pray or fast in secret?
--> one of my all-time favorite quotes is: "when we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live." if we care more about what God thinks than what anyone else thinks, then i believe we get more fulfillment out of whatever acts we are doing because we aren't doing it for the accolades of friends or the world, we aren't doing it to get noticed. we are doing it because we want to do it, to please the Lord, because we know it is the right thing to do, because Christ would do it if He were here, and we are His followers.

--> i was baptized on may 31, 1997 by my father. i remember feeling lots of things: nervousness because i didn't like being in front of people, excited to wear my new baptism dress, embarrassed when i stepped into the water and the beautiful baptism dress my mother made me to be baptized in floated to the top of the water, happiness when i sang a song with friends then another with my family, love that so many people would come support my big day, and honestly a little confused when people would say "congrats on making this choice to be baptized". i remember thinking that it wasn't really a choice, of course i was going to be baptized. i've often reflected on that attitude... and wished i was better about applying it to every aspect of the gospel. of course i'm going to choose the right. of course i'm going to read my scriptures today. of course i'm going to go to church every week and the temple often. of course my family will never miss an fhe. of course of course of course.
i also remember thinking i would never sin again. about an hour later, at lunch, i hit coleman my brother and the moment i did, i was totally devastated that i was no longer perfect. my mom had a good discussion with me about repentance after that, but it just didn't seem the same. thank goodness i understand it now :)
my baptism day was so special to me, and i will forever be grateful for the CHOICE i made to become a member of the church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints, and all that entails!

the people went to the Savior "one by one until they had all gone forth". what does this teach you about how the Savior feels about each one of us? what thoughts and feelings would you have had if you had been among the nephites when the Savior visited them?
--> this has long since been my favorite chapter in the book of mormon. i love everything about it. i love the climax that it is in the book of mormon: the crowning event. i love the Savior's invitation - to BRING people to Him. he didn't just say come and feel my hands and feet, He asked for the people that were sick or afflicted to be brought to Him, meaning the sick and the whole had to come together. the fact that He took time to meet and greet with each person one on one shows such care and concern. He was just as excited to see each of them as they were to see him. He was there to minister and love. this account speaks more to me about what it means to have Christlike love than any other chapter in modern scripture. i like to just imagine myself there. the imagery is so real:
"as they cast their eyes up again towards heaven; and behold they saw a Man descending out of heaven; and he was clothed in a white robe; and he came down and stood in the midst of them; and the eyes of the multitude were turned upon him, and they durst not open their mouths... and he stretched forth his hand and spake unto the people saying: behold, i am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world. and behold, i am the light and the life of the world."

in what ways is the Savior like a hen protecting her chicks from danger? when have you felt the Savior's invitations to receive His nourishment and protection?
--> i love the image of a mother hen taking all her chickies under her wing, especially in the midst of a storm or danger. they find refuge, warmth, and closeness there. i like to imagine the Savior's loving embrace as He protects us from danger and temptation.
i feel protected all the time. the examples that are coming to mind are all examples of me driving on the road and being protected from some accident, or looking a certain way at the exact right moment to prevent me from something i could've hit or something. even though i'm totally a distracted driver, i'm grateful that i have that protection.

what do you think it means to offer a sacrifice of a "broken heart and a contrite spirit"? what blessings does the Savior promise those who come unto Him with a broken heart and contrite spirit?
--> when i think about a broken heart, i think about a heart that has been through a lot. i think about a heart that is open, humble, teachable, meek. a heart and soul that is ready to hear the word of the Lord and follow it. the word "contrite" means to show repentance and sorrow for wrongdoing (per say). if we have a contrite spirit and a broken heart, we are looking for ways to change and accepting the direction of the Lord, even when it is hard to hear, or hard to implement. Christ promises that He will bless all those that come unto Him. he also says more specifically that those who come unto Him with a broken heart and contrite spirit will be baptized by the spirit and water: two of the greatest blessings we can receive on this earth!

what signs of the Savior's second coming have already occurred? how do you feel when you recognize something as a clear sign that the Savior's second coming is approaching?
--> there are so many of the signs that have already occurred, or that are occurring right now. i would like to address the second question - how do i feel when i recognize this? part of me likes to think about how cool it is... that i might be alive for His return to earth. part of me gets nervous... thinking about how much i need to do to prepare myself for that day. part of my gets anxious... thinking about all the family and friends that i need to spread the message of the gospel to before that day. part of me gets excited... thinking about the promises given to us in the scriptures and how amazing it will be to have perfect peace on the earth again with the Savior here to rule the government. i know there is much we can read about the second coming and the days following, but there's also a lot of unknowns. things we can't predict or imagine. i'm excited to see that all unfold in its due time. (and i'm happy to wait for that due time!)

what principles can we learn from the example of those who repented and followed nephi?
--> the most inspiring thing in this section of verses to me says that there were none who learned the words of the Savior who were not baptized by water. this to me shows of the strength of the word of God, and the power it has to change the lives of those that choose to allow it to change them. when we choose to repent and apply the Savior's words in our lives, we are blessed. simply put.

how and why is satan trying to divide the people today?
--> he is trying to divide them for the same purpose he's always been trying to divide people: because he is doing everything he can to fight against the plan and will of Heavenly Father. satan can't have a body. he can't come to earth as a mortal and learn and progress and experience the joy, hope, love, and peace that we feel, or have hope for a resurrection and eternal life someday... so he works his hardest to ensure that he takes as many as he can down with him.
the "how" is also an easy question - though uniquely crafted to each individual on the earth. the scary thing is that satan knows us really well... better than we know ourselves, actually. he knows what our weaknesses are and how to tempt us so we fall. there's a reason the scriptures and the brethren of the church are constantly talking about the importance of doing the simple things: reading scriptures, praying daily, attending church to renew our baptismal covenant, serving others, and staying faithful to the covenants we have made. it is these small fortifications that will help us to build the solid foundation to stay strong against the temptations of the devil.

what do these verses teach about the relationship between pride and satan's power to tempt us?
--> satan leads these people away by enticing them with riches, and the "vain things of the world". as they became more and more set on those things, their attention is diverted further and further from the Lord and things of an eternal nature. the saddest verse is verse 18 - "they did not sin ignorantly, for they knew the will of God concerning them, for it had been taught unto them, therefore they did willfully rebel against God". pride has a way of creeping in and overtaking our ability to think coherently because we have a cloudy view of what really matters. there is a great sermon on pride that was given in general conference years ago. if you'd like to read that, click here.

what actions can we take to help ourselves remain humble and faithful in any circumstance?
--> i think the contrast in verse 13 of chapter 6 is interesting... it talks about how the same things were happening to all the people, but different people responded differently. some were humble in their afflictions, some got riled up. some responded with faith and hope to their trials, others turned bitter and against God. some chose pride, others chose to be humble, and so on. in verse 14, it talks about the righteous people being firm and steadfast in following the word of the Lord. they were "immovable" - which is a word i've always liked because it signifies constant and unwavering determination. and perhaps the kicker for the whole verse and section is this phrase "they were willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord". no matter what they were asked, they had the resolve to follow what the Lord wanted them to do. i have a long way to go until i reach this point of dedication, but hope to get there someday :)

according to these verses, what is the role of a disciple of Christ? what are some ways we can fulfill this role?
--> the phrase that stuck out to me the most in this passage was, "they did serve God with diligence, both day and night." when i think of a true disciple of Christ, i think of someone who's mind and heart and will is so aligned with the heart, mind, and will of God, that they are not only doing what Christ was do, but they are being what Christ would be and what Christ is. they have dedicated their lives - both in the day and in the night - to helping others and serving as Jesus would serve if He were still here. this passage also speaks about the importance of forsaking all sin and repenting. constantly trying to be better, more holy, more pure.
one of the challenges of living in the time that we do now, is the busy nature of our schedule. we have so many things going on that remembering to serve can be pushed to the back burner. it doesn't seem urgent, so it is easier to forget and not make a priority. i love what elder christensen says in his book "the power of everyday missionaries" - that every calling we have is a missionary calling. everything we do in this life, everywhere we go, gives us opportunity to be like Christ and serve as His disciple.

have you had an experience in which you relied on God and He helped you endure or overcome a trial?
--> at the beginning of this school year, i was really struggling with one certain boy in my class. i have a lot of trouble kids this year, but one in particular, i just hadn't figured out how to manage or deal with him yet. one night, after a particularly challenging day (in fact, the 2nd worst day in my teaching career...), i just pled that i would be able to know how to solve this issue with this boy and know how to use his mother for the support i needed. that night, his mom called for a meeting the next day. i worried about the meeting all night and all the next school day. when it came time for the meeting, i was so calm and the meeting went perfectly. we were both able to express our feelings and points of view about the situation, and talk through some solutions together. i won't say that the issue is completely solved now... in fact, every day is a struggle with this little guy. but things are improving and i feel that i am being inspired more and more every day to know how to handle him, how to interact with him, and how to help him be what he needs to be. in talking to my principal, she was mentioning that she was impressed that i was able to approach the situation with such tact and a calm demeanor. i replied that the only reason was because i was able to rely on God for His strength and help. every day i am constantly praying to know how to help these little ones, and every day, i am understanding more and more how i needed to treat them, or what to say, or what they will respond to. God is so good to us. He desires to help us in our weaknesses and trials!

when have you felt protected by God? how can we show gratitude for that protection?
--> last night, actually, i felt incredibly protected by the Lord. julie hanks and i went up to logan for the homecoming festivities. we decided to drive back late, late after the game. we got on the road at 12:30am. it was earlyyyyy and i was tired. i had 3 passengers. the drive home isn't the easiest... it's down sardine canyon, then a pretty straight shot to SLC, but there is always construction and windy roads, etc. my eyes were so heavy as i drove and i kept thinking i just need to push through and keep my eyes open! there were 2 times when i drifted a bit and it startled me awake... i've only started to fall asleep at the wheel 2 times in my life, and last night was one of them... this morning when i was thinking more clearly in the shower, i just had this feeling that i had a guardian angel looking after me last night that shook me awake. i didn't hit the rumble strips either time that i drifted, i just shook awake. i am so grateful for the way the Lord protects and watches over us. i'm sure that it occurs more often than we realize.
there is a picture floating around out there that has a man getting hit by a rock in the first frame as he screams "ouch!" in the second frame, you see Christ standing with open arms, being pelted by all kinds of rocks and leaning His head back and saying, "sorry, did i miss one?" when i saw this photo again the other week, it was a nice reminder that the Lord is truly watching out for us and it is impossible to imagine what our lives would be like if He weren't in it. i am grateful for Him and the protection He gives me daily. i could be better about vocalizing that gratitude in my daily prayers. something to work on this week.

how can we fortify our homes against the attacks of the adversary? why are temporal preparations, such as getting an education and home storage, important in the last days?
--> i feel like this topic and question gets brought up on this insta feed a lot. and my answers never change: read your scriptures, pray everyday, go to church, stay in the temple, and serve. the small things become the big things.
temporal preparations are important because the prophet asked us to do them. they know things that are to come and have asked us to get our affairs in order. if we are prepared, we will be able to focus our efforts on other people.

what are some examples of how the adversary might use flattery (insincere or excessive praise) on youth today? what are some false promises or empty threats that the adversary might use?
--> two words: social media. social media is a beautiful tool to keep in contact with friends and family over the world, to share the gospel, and to spread goodness and light, but of course it's also a tool for destruction if we aren't careful. i find myself falling victim to the "perfection syndrome" of thinking everyone around me has perfect lives because of what they choose to post. it's so easy to gain self-esteem from how many likes you get on pictures. it's so easy to check social media multiple times a day for fear of missing out. it's so easy to feel like you have to portray yourself a certain way on the internet. satan hammers lies into us on the internet and we have to decide how to deal with them. it's not a matter of if we will see or be exposed to them or not, it's a matter of how we will respond!

why do you think forgetting spiritual experiences can make us vulnerable to satan? what can we do to ensure that we do not forget the spiritual experiences we have had?
--> i am a strong believer in writing in journals and making a record of our lives. i have always loved keeping a journal and writing down things that make a difference in my life. when i got my patriarchal blessing, it emphasized the importance of continuing to keep my journal faithfully. it says that i should record the people that make a significance in my life, record the things that i want to pass down to my children, and record the things that build and reinforce my testimony. when we take the time to write down the things that mean the most to us and the spiritual experiences that we have, we can remember them better and reflect on them often. i LOVE to look back on my journals and remember the things i've learned in the past to help me in the present and future. forgetting spiritual experiences can make us vulnerable to satan because he makes us doubt the things that we know.

even though many great signs and miracles took place among the people, what reason did the wicked give for persecuting the righteous? why do signs usually fail to convince the wicked to change?
--> the wicked said that the sign hadn't come so the righteous' prayers were in vain. they attributed the sign not coming to their lack of faith, and told them their joy had also been in vain. it's interesting to note that as the prophecies from the prophets about the coming of the Savior increased, the persecutions increased as well.
in the scriptures it says "a wicked and idolatrous generation seeketh after a sign". signs fail to convince the wicked because seeing isn't believing. the Lord has designed a specific way to experience the truth for ourselves and come to know what we need to know about Him and His teaching, and it isn't seeing a physical sign. when justin brown was giving his farewell speech for his mission, he said that all the spoken words that day didn't matter, but rather the feelings that you experienced as you were listening.

how can we tell if we are beginning to reject the words of the prophet in our personal lives? what will happen to us if we reject the Lord's latter day prophets?
--> to me, one of the "radars" i can use to take a spiritual "temperature" is rationalization. i find that the more i am trying to rationalize things that i am doing in my life, the further i am drifting from the teachings of the prophets and the Savior. rationalization and justification are one of satan's greatest tools. once we start justifying the choices we are making, we step further and further away from the light. unfortunately, that is a prevalent attitude in the world today. also, comparing our righteousness with other people's righteousness can be detrimental to our salvation because we start thinking things like "well, i'm not perfect, but i'm not as bad as _____" or "as long as i don't do _____ like ____ did, i'm ok...".

why do you think people respond to prophets and their messages in different ways? how will you choose to respond to the messages from conference this weekend?
--> different people are at different places in their lives, and we all have different views and beliefs and levels of spirituality. depending on where we are at in our lives, we respond to different things in different ways. (could i say the word "different" three more times? hah). it all comes down to agency. we choose to respond to messages from the Lord in different ways.
i sometimes find myself overwhelmed after conference weekend because as much of a spiritual uplifting it is, it is a rebuking too... and causes me to think about all the things that i need to be doing better, or things that i have been slacking off in. because there are so many talks and messages all in such a short period of time, it's hard to really soak it all in and get out of each talk what the Lord wants me to. so... in the days, weeks, and months that follow conference, i find the greater spiritual enlightenment comes when i take the time to study and apply the things that have been taught. lately i have been listening to conference talks in the morning as i get ready and it has made all the difference in my day. to respond to the messages this time around, i would like to do the same - listen to them in the morning over and over, and also read them and highlight them and apply them in ways that are specific to me.

how is the Lord's chastening a sign of His love?
--> He chastens whom He loveth because He wants us to come unto Him. sometimes we need the chastening to wake up and realize what is going on that we need to fix. the reason we are here is to prepare ourselves to live with Him again. the Lord chastening us proves that He wants to be steadily involved in our lives and He cares so much about what we do with our lives.

how has your belief in the Savior led you to repent and strive to be more like Him?
--> the more i learn about the Savior, His teachings, and His life, the more I want to be like him. the more i read about the Savior, the more the desire to learn about Him increases. He is grace, truth, light, hope, love, and peace. He is eternal and endless. He is unconditionally loving us and reaching for us to repent and access the Atonement He made for us.

how are the statements and attitudes we read about in helaman 13:27 apparent in our day? what are some ways people seek happiness in doing iniquity?
--> especially in a day like today, where an independent, abrasive attitude is becoming the popular norm, these verses are completely applicable and even a bit foreshadowing. there is sin and iniquity all around us. so many guilty pleasures in the world that people indulge in. and we all have something we struggle with. satan makes wickedness look so appealing. i went to a concert a few weeks ago at usana amphitheater and kept looking around at all the people drinking and kept thinking to myself that those people were having SO much fun right then. they had no cares in the world. just letting loose, hanging with their friends, listening to good music, soaking in the moment, dancing like crazy, guys hanging on them. sometimes that life looks appealing to me. but then i realized that that kind of happiness is so fleeting. they'll wake up the next morning and all the memories of the night will be just happy memories (if they remember anything at all...). i know it's much more important to seek the things of the Lord and seek the things that will bring eternal happiness. but sometimes that is hard when the messages that are coming at us from all angles show that wickedness actually does look like happiness. but what you don't see in all those faces is the guilt and unhappiness afterwards. you don't see the hangover in the morning or the regret in their heart when they've made a poor choice. i am grateful for the knowledge of the gospel that i have, and for the resolve to follow the prophet and prepare for the Savior's second coming. i am far from perfect, but i'd like to think i'm perfectly trying to be better each and every day.

in what ways does the Lord give the warnings mentioned in these verses? how do these verses apply to us today?
--> just like the Lord sent samuel the prophet to the nephites, He will always send a prophet to teach us and warn us of things to come. if we stay close to the prophet and follow his counsel, we will know what to do when a situation arises. the things that samuel taught were the same things that are taught by prophets today. things that will help us prepare for what is to come, whatever it may be: exercising faith, repenting, praying to the Father for help and forgiveness, reaching out to help and invite others to come back to God, soften our hearts, return to God, etc.
the people in this chapter were hearing about the coming of the Savior into the world. they were given specific signs to look for to show them when he would arrive. they were taught how to draw near to the Savior when He did come. i've heard that the best way to prepare and know about what it will be like for the Savior to come a second time will be to study and follow what the righteous people did to prepare for His coming the first time. i've always loved the story of samuel the lamanite - it's been one of my favorites ever since i was a little girl. i love that the Savior is finally being born and that the way is being prepared for Him to come again, perhaps in my lifetime.

how can remembering God's greatness help us avoid pride? what else can we do to be humble instead of prideful?
--> i love the references to us being less than the dust of the earth in this section. even the dust and the winds and the waters obey the voice of the Lord and go withersoever he listeth to send them. this has always been a good reminder to me. humility isn't my strong characteristic, but i like to pretend it is... for recognition... ha ha. remembering that we are literally nothing helps me to remember God's greatness and helps me remember to be humble. i appreciate the opportunity to feel God's love for me, and to feel that i matter to Him, but also appreciate the reminders that i am so small and weak compared to His greatness. i need to be submissive to Him. "if God were a novelist, He would use a pen to write your story. be a willing and meek pen." - elder nashif of my mtc district once said that quote. i've always loved it.

why do you think people who are prosperous sometimes forget the Lord? why do you think people sometimes need to be chastened before they remember the Lord?
--> when things are going well in our lives, it is easy to give the credit to ourselves, saying that we have worked so hard and earned this, or that we are making decisions in our lives that would lead us to that point. however, when things are going wrong, we often blame outside circumstances or the Lord. i'm guilty of having less consistent and less meaningful scripture study and prayers when things are going right, then when something happens and i really need the Lord's help, just pouring out my soul to Him. it's backwards. we should be just as close to our Father in times of joy and prosperity as we are in times of despair, hurt, and discouragement. just last night, i was thinking about how i wanted to be better at more consistent prayer and scripture study (the same thing i've been wanting to be better at for 2 and a half years now - WHY CAN'T I KICK INTO GEAR?!) reading about the pride cycle this morning reminded me that i totally relate to the things these people are going through, and the patterns that are so prevalent in the book of mormon. sometimes when reading about other people, it's easy to be judgmental and think things like "wow, how could they forget the Lord, after all He's done for them?" when just last night, i was complaining to God about the smallest thing that was (or wasn't) happening in my life, and i had a realization that, "wow, sara, look at all the blessings you DO have. i bet God just feels disappointed when He listens to you sometimes because of how ungrateful you are. He's given you so much, but it's never enough. it's a constant, 'when i have this.... i will be happy'. or 'when this happens, i will go to the temple more'... etc" what i'm trying to say is that the pride cycle is so prevalent today. sometimes we do need that chastening as a wake-up call! i want to be closer to the Lord. i am grateful for the chance to ponder this question today.

what can we learn from the cycle of righteousness and wickedness that is seen many times in the scriptures?
--> we can learn that it is real and still happening today. it is almost comical to take a look at the state of the world and see the same patterns occurring that happened in the book of mormon. but that's what the scriptures are there for... to warn us of the dangers of certain things happening by helping us see patterns in people of the past. often we have to experience the same heartache of going through it ourselves to learn our lessons anyway, but i think it's safe to say it becomes a little easier when we've read about it before and can recognize the cycle. right?

when has a "famine" in your life brought you closer to God? what blessings did you see by getting through it?
--> there are a number of times i could speak to, but i was thinking this morning about times of famine on my mission in calgary, canada. the people of calgary are warm and friendly as a general rule, but many are wealthy and worship money as their God. they are happy and have everything they need monetarily, so they don't see a need for anything else in their lives. there were definitely times we had a famine of investigators. i often wondered what more i needed to be doing. what else did i need to figure out or fast about or pray about or work out with the Lord to see success? when would the famine end? even sometimes when i felt like i was doing all i could do, no investigators came. strange as it sounds, i think this grew my confidence in the Lord and His timing. i really learned that no matter how hard i worked, it was never up to me when we would find someone that was ready to hear the gospel. i think about my mission nearly every day, and really appreciate the lessons i learned while serving. the lesson about trusting the Lord's timing is so applicable every single day. especially in the dating realm, or anything i feel like i am righteously waiting for and anxiously wanting to happen.

what have you done in your life lately to show the Lord that His will is more important than your own?
--> tomorrow is the perfect example of this. there is a utah football game (which we have season tickets to), and the general women's meeting for conference at the same time. i've been having an internal struggle about where i should go. my dad paid good money for the tickets and i missed the last game... but after some discussion with a few people and that guilty feeling from the spirit that i appreciate so much, i knew that the general meeting was where i was supposed to be. so, i gave up my ticket to utah football and am going to the general women's meeting. and i'm actually really excited about it. i feel peace knowing that is where i need to be, and am anxious for the revelation i am going to receive while there.

unlike most prophets, nephi offered the people a sign or further witness of his prophetic calling. what does the judges' reaction tell you about why prophets do not generally give signs?
--> rather than let themselves believe the miraculous fact that nephi had prophesied what was going to happen in the murder, the judges thought he orchestrated it himself for accolades. "a wicked and idolatrous generation seeketh after a sign", as the scriptures say. this is why prophets are careful to produce signs. they can always be thwarted and twisted in detrimental ways. sometimes in the scriptures i wonder if these signs did more damage than good?
